Avocado. AVOCADO. AVOCADO.
And being that it is
NATIONAL AVOCADO DAY
I’m talking about why you NEED them in your diet.
Ok. So why is this THE thing you need in your diet? Lemme tell you.
The health benefits are ENDLESS. Medical News Today stated:
Also known as an alligator pear or butter fruit, the versatile avocado is the only fruit that provides a substantial amount of healthy monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA). Avocados are a naturally nutrient-dense food and contain nearly 20 vitamins and minerals.
They’re packed with healthy fats that many people don’t realize they NEED. And they’re packed with so many vitamins it’s ridiculous. Get this… An avocado has more potassium than a banana. Potassium just so happens to also be something that a lot of people are lacking.
Avocados are high in vitamins B and E, which work at the cellular level to protect and strengthen hair. Vitamin B is essential for hair growth. Vitamin E helps repair damage on the scalp, which may slow or prevent hair growing. Healthy hair grows half an inch every month.
So if you’re trying to get your hair to grow, I’m telling you, eat this magic.
If GREAT hair isn’t enough to convince you, avocados can also help with the following:
- weight loss
- healthy skin
- healthy nails
- reduced blood pressure
- reduced inflammation
- reduced risk of cancer
- reduced “bad” cholesterol
- increased “good” cholesterol
- feeding friendly bacteria in the intestine
- increased antioxidant intake from other plant foods
Trust me on this, you want this in your diet. Even for those of you who don’t like the taste of it. There are so many ways you can incorporate it into your meals to where you won’t even taste it.
Some of my favorite ways to eat avocado include…
I have a couple of go-to’s. When I’m lazy I will literally just cut an avocado in half, take out the pit, and fill the the holes with one of three things, 1. Sriracha, 2. chili pepper, or 3. hot peppers. I LOVE spice. (If you follow me on snapchat you know this already)
But if I’m feeling motivated to actually make something I’ll have grilled avocado with poached eggs (covered in Sriracha of course…) All you do is cut an avocado in half, remove the pit and grill it. Then poach some eggs and put them where the pit was. And there you have it. Super simple and quick meal that is super good for you.
And then there’s the obvious put-it-on-everything move… Absolutely everything you guys. Salads, burgers, sandwiches, pizza, eggs, salmon, tacos, EVERYTHING.
If you live in the Chicago area… Go to Taphouse (they have a few locations) and try their Avocado Tacos. They will literally blow your mind. It’s not the healthiest way to eat avocado (because their fried), but the taste is unreal. It’s fried pieces of avocado topped with lime-marinated cabbage, chipotle aioli, and corn salsa. And it’s AMAZING.
What are some ways you like to eat your avocado? Let me know. I’m always trying to find excuses to eat them… :P
