I’m definitely a summer person.
Like winter is fun and all (Christmas, Snowboarding, a break from school…) But like. SUMMER.
AKA an even longer break from school, sun, swim, my birthday, nights in the city, need I go on?
But one of my favorite, and I mean FAVORITE, parts of summer is the fact that I can eat endless, juicy, ice cold watermelon. *insert 10,000 heart-eye emoji’s
(Side note. I took this picture at LIB right after I got it. There was a guy with a full on fruit stand and as soon as I saw he had watermelon I quite literally did a happy dance. On top of it some random guy paid for our watermelon… double score. Slash. LIB is life changing. I’ll have to tell you all about it sometime.)
This article in Live Science had this to say –
Watermelons are mostly water — about 92 percent — but this refreshing fruit is soaked with nutrients. Each juicy bite has significant levels of vitamins A, B6 and C, lots of lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids. There’s even a modest amount of potassium. Plus, this quintessential summer snack is fat-free, very low in sodium and has only 40 calories per cup.
Did you read that?? Vitamin A and C. These vitamins both help with growth of new collagen and elastin cells. LADIES! That means better hair and skin! *dramatic fist pump
On top of that it’s full of antioxidants and helps to burn belly fat.
So basically it’s actually the perfect summer snack. Not to mention it works wonders at keeping you hydrated. The juice is packed full of electrolytes and can prevent heat stroke. So you might actually be crazy for not having this at your next summer BBQ…
What I love about watermelon, besides the fact that it tastes like heaven, is the fact that it’s so filling. A bowl of it is sufficient enough to keep me full for a very long time. It’s like how they tell you to drink a glass of water before you eat to limit your intake of calories… Except it tastes better and your body will actually feel like it’s being fed… because it is… AND it’s only 40 calories a cup. SCORE.
My friends out there looking to shed a few pounds… watermelon is your friend. Your best friend.
Another great way to enjoy watermelon – JUICE.
This is one of my new favorites… WTRMLN WTR. The name, the cute little bottle… I die.
A lot of restaurants are also catching on to the fact that this stuff is the shit…
One of my favorite vegan restaurants has a Watermelon Fresco on the menu too. It has bits of watermelon and mint in it. I literally drink like 10 glasses of it whenever I go. It’s actually 50% of the reason why I go in the first place… (kidding. but not really.) If any of you have a Native Foods Cafe near you, CHECK IT OUT.
And for anyone out there who wants to tell me I shouldn’t eat it too often because of all of the sugar…
Please just, shut up.
If you’re going to eat any kind of sugar (which let’s be real here, you know you are) I would much rather it come from fruit; which has NATURAL sugar in it. Obviously I’m not telling you to eat an entire watermelon (and trust me, you probably wouldn’t be able to being that it’s that filling). Too much of anything is a bad thing. But don’t be afraid to munch on it until you’re full. ;)
Where are my watermelon lovers out there?? Any suggestions on different ways to try it? Please share!
