I like kombucha. No surprise there. If you follow me on snapchat or instagram (which, you should :P) you know this by now. I drink it while I’m doing work, I drink it on the way to the gym, after the gym, in the morning, at night, ALL THE TIME.
And if you remember when I interviewed the masterminds over at Kombucha Dog you know that they’re one of my favorite brands and such a great cause.
But I never really got into the health benefits of kombucha. And boy there are so many.
You know how sometimes you’ll pick up some really good health tip, incorporate it into your life and then along the way you kinda forget about it?
That’s what kombucha has been for me. But I’ve brought it back and I can tell you it’s here to stay. Because I am as obsessed as ever. I feel like it’s not that huge of a thing in the midwest (much like many other things in my little hippie world) and I really want to change that.
Let’s start with the first thing you need to know. Kombucha is full of a little thing called SCOBY, which stands for symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast. And SCOBY is basically what turns the drink into kombucha. It’s along the lines of what makes yogurt or sourdough bread. SCOBY have been around for thousands of years and is continuously saved to make more kombucha.
Now let’s get to the good stuff. Here are the greatest (in my opinion) benefits of kombucha according to Dr. Axe:
- It improves digestion and helps weight loss with Probiotics, Acetic Acid and Polyphenols
- Supports the immune system with antioxidants
- Cleanses and detoxifies
- Increases daily energy with its enzymes and Vitamin B
- Helps with preventing and fighting cancer with Glucaric Acid
It does all of that AND tastes good. I mean, how much easier could taking care of yourself get??
For those of you who enjoy drinking soda for the combination of the sweet taste and the bubbles you’re really gonna like this one.
When kombucha is made the natural way, through fermentation, it isn’t force carbonated. Meaning the bubbles are all natural.
On top of it all, if you’re really lucky, you can get a little buzz off of it. That is if you’re a total lightweight like me… lol. Which makes it a perfect cocktail mixer.
I HIGHLY advise you incorporate kombucha into your wellness plan. I have literally gotten to a point where it’s hard to go a day without it. Even my dog likes it… :P
What’s your favorite kombucha brand? Do you know of any native to Chicago?
